Edson nasceu em Angola, logo após o país se ter tornado independente. Era um rapaz muito alto. Por causa da sua altura, destacava-se. As pessoas que davam armas a crianças, para lutarem como soldados na guerra civil, queriam rapazes como ele.
Edson was born in Angola, just after the country became independent. He was a very tall boy. Because of his height he stood out. The people who were giving weapons to children to fight as soldiers in the civil war wanted boys like him.
A sua mãe teve medo que o levassem, por isso decidiu enviá-lo para viver em Portugal com uma tia. Ela pensou que ele estaria a salvo lá.
His mother was afraid they would take him, so she decided to send him to live in Portugal with an aunt. She thought he would be safe there.
No início foi muito difícil, pois Edson sentiu falta do tempo quente, da comida tradicional e, acima de tudo, dos abraços e beijos da sua mãe.
It was very difficult to begin with, as Edson missed the warm weather, the traditional food and, most of all, his mother’s hugs and kisses.
Ele não falava bem português e tinha muita dificuldade em acompanhar as aulas e as conversas dos seus colegas de turma. Questionava-se se, afinal, teria sido uma boa ideia ter vindo para Portugal.
He did not speak Portuguese well and found it very hard to follow his classes and the conversations of his classmates. He wondered if it was a good idea to come to Portugal after all.
Um dia, um professor reparou como ele jogava bem basquetebol. Entrou para uma equipa e teve muito sucesso. Tornou-se popular na escola e fez amigos. Também se tornou mais confiante.
One day a teacher noticed how good he was at basketball. He joined a basketball team and was very successful. He became popular at school and made friends. He also became more confident.
Agora que é adulto, Edson treina crianças refugiadas e outras que estão em risco de exclusão. Outrora, a sua altura colocou-o em risco de se tornar uma criança-soldado. Agora, dá-lhe força para ajudar os outros a sentirem-se seguros.
Now that he is an adult, Edson trains refugee children and others at risk of being excluded from society. Once, his height put him in danger of becoming a child soldier. Now, his height gives him strength to help others feel safe.
